Alyson Slutzky
Tell us about you:
I'm Alyson Slutzky. I retired a year ago from my private psychotherapy practice, and decided to dedicate this year of my life to helping the Democrats win the Presidency, Senate & House. I'm involved with Swing Left Greater Boston & the Swing Left group Left Field. I am Lead Phone Bank Organizer for Maine for SLGB. I co-host weekly letter writing events for Left Field and for my friends.
What inspired you to first step into action?
I became despondent after the 2016 Republican Convention, as I realized Trump could win. Friends encouraged me to step into action. I canvassed for Hillary in Allentown, PA for 2 weekends before the election. Other than voting in every election, this was my 1st political action taken in my adult life. My gut just told me that I had to start becoming active to save our democracy. A switch just flipped in me.
How did you do it? What was it like for you?
I attended the Wash DC 2017 Women's March. I started calling my elected officials. I joined my local Indivisible group. I canvassed in the 2018 Midterm Election through that group & Swing Left for the Mickie Sherrill campaign. My canvassing friend couldn't join me, so I learned that I could show up alone & be paired with another canvasser. This was empowering for me to learn I could do this alone & not be dependent on anyone else.
What advice do you have for folks who want to step into advocacy but aren't sure how?
Even if you're not confident & feel scared, step into your fear and take an action anyway. Make calls to Congress. Volunteer for a campaign. They'll teach you what you can do. Join in letter writing and/or phone banking. There are organizations registering voters. All of these things can be done from the comfort of your home. Reach out to your friends & ask them to get involved too.
